Important news about belairdirect auto insurance in British Columbia

A word from Jeremy Green

Ever since we first expanded our car and home insurance products and services to British Columbia, we've been committed to offering consumers the choice and flexibility when it comes to protecting what matters to them.

ICBC’s recent regulatory changes and the province’s current auto insurance market conditions have reduced opportunities for the private sector to compete. After careful consideration, we have made the decision to no longer offer optional auto, recreational vehicle or motorcycle insurance in British Columbia. Although we’re transitioning out of the optional auto insurance market, belairdirect will continue to provide great products and coverages for your home and travel insurance needs.

We stopped selling new belairdirect auto insurance policies on December 1, 2020 and issuing renewals as of January 1, 2021.

Should the auto insurance market conditions in British Columbia change in the future, we would be honoured to provide you with the optional car insurance coverage and the peace of mind you deserve.

Under ICBC, British Columbians pay more for auto insurance than anyone else in Canada. We want to help lower premiums in B.C. and are committed to working with government to create a system that works for everyone. Recent announcements from the government, means less competition and fewer choices for auto insurance for consumers.

Competition provides a powerful incentive for any company to keep prices down and to deliver the best customer service possible. Auto insurance is no exception to this rule.

We believe that consumers are best served when they have choice through competition and options for their auto insurance.

With recent changes to auto insurance in B.C., the opportunities for the private sector to play a role in offering clients a fair premium and to compete, has been reduced.

Enhanced Care will expand the third-party liability coverage offered for vehicle owners who purchase their insurance policies from ICBC as of May 1, 2021.

Since part of this coverage will be included in your basic insurance provided by ICBC, belairdirect will only be charging customers for the coverage that is not included in Enhanced Care. As a result, we will be reimbursing customers for part of their unearned premium on their Excess Third-Party Liability coverage from May 1, 2021 to the end of their policy insurance term.
