What is residential all-risk insurance coverage?
All-risk insurance coverage, sometimes referred to as all-perils insurance, is a coverage that protects your property from risks and perils that are not named, such as accidents or unforeseeable incidents, with the exception of those that are specifically excluded. All-risk insurance coverage protects you from incidents that are sudden, accidental, and NOT specifically excluded within your policy.
As a homeowner, you do your best to make sure your home is safe. But sometimes, life happens. And when it does, the damage that occurs can be unpredictable.
With all-risk insurance, you can get peace of mind knowing that you’re protecting your home from scenarios even you couldn’t imagine occurring. From falling branches to damage caused by the wind, get the coverage you deserve for your most important investment.
What does residential all-risk insurance cover?
Residential all-risk insurance coverage could cover a variety of unpredictable accidents or incidents, which maye include:
- Theft
- Vandalism
- Damage caused by ice, snow or sleet
- Accidental damage caused by electrical currents
- Damage caused by wind
- Damage caused by hail
- Falling objects
- Fire and smoke damage
- And more
Residential all-risk insurance protects you and your home from incidents that are sudden, accidental and that haven’t been excluded from your insurance policy.
Be sure to carefully read your policy to see what incidents or damages might be specifically excluded from your policy. Talk to your insurance agent if you have any questions, as all-risk insurance coverage can vary from province to province.
What is a peril in insurance?
To an insurance company, a peril is defined as an event that occurs by chance that is unexpected, accidental, and causes a loss or damage.
That could include regular wear and tear to a home, such as the gradual erosion of roof shingles or old pipes beginning to rust are considered uninsured perils, as they are to be expected as time passes.
However, if someone were to unexpectedly vandalize your garage door, and it required repairs to clean and restore it, the event could be considered a peril.
Refer to your insurance policy to see what kind of perils you are covered for, and talk to an insurance agent if you have questions.
What are named perils?
Named perils are specific events mentioned in writing within the insurance policy. The damage stemming from a named peril can be covered in the event that an incident occurs. Your insurance policy will provide the definitions of the damages covered.
Damages caused by perils not named or excluded on your policy may not be covered. It is therefore important that you talk with an insurance professional from a trusted provider to discuss specific perils that may affect your home.
If your home might be susceptible to damages that are not included in your home insurance policy, you will need to request that the coverage be added as a named peril to your home insurance policy.
As opposed to a named perils policy, which covers only the risks named in the policy, an all-risks policy can cover all risks that may cause damage to your home or property, even if they include an unexplained or mysterious disappearance (e.g., loss of jewellery or a watch).
Even some "Acts of God" commonly considered to be excluded may be covered, including windstorms, tornadoes, forest fires and explosions.
However, certain exclusions do apply, such as:
- Damage caused by water coming from outside the building (water infiltration through walls, foundations, doors and windows, through the roof, flooding and sewer back-up).
- Damage that occurs while you are renting your home, if the rental period is longer than 30 days in a year.
- Damage caused by animals (including vermin such as insects and rodents).
- Gradual damage (including mould and rot).
- Earthquakes.
- Vacancy (damage occurring while your building is vacant*).
- Intentional misconduct or criminal acts.
There are also certain limitations on the amount of coverage applicable to certain types of property including jewellery and watches, bicycles, software, video games, works of art, boats and furs.
Always remember to read your insurance policy carefully and consult your insurance agent if you have any questions.
*Vacant building:
(a) The condition of a dwelling building, empty or not of its contents, that all the occupants have left without intention of returning to live in it.
(b) The condition of a newly constructed dwelling building from the time the work is completed until the occupants move in.
