Why does car insurance go up after an at-fault accident?

After an accident, insurance rates for the drivers involved will typically go up.

Car insurance premiums are calculated in part by using your driving record. Events such as tickets, past claims, criminal convictions, and of course, accidents, are all taken into account.

An insurance company usually has access to your driving history. It is important to remember that auto insurance is calculated using risk factors.

Statistically speaking, the more accidents you’re involved in, the higher the risk for an insurance company when they decide to take you on as a customer.

It’s important to always be vigilant on the road when behind the wheel. According to the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, statistically speaking, the three most common causes of accidents are driving under the influence, reckless speeding and distracted driving.

That’s why it’s so crucial that all drivers follow the rules of the road.

Frequently asked questions about
Accident Forgiveness

A premium is the amount you pay to an insurance company for your coverage.

When we calculate your premium, we look at a lot of things, including:

  • Your age and driving experience
  • Whether your vehicle is for business, commuting or leisure
  • The year, make, model and type of vehicle
  • Claims you've made in the past
  • The driving history of any other people who will be behind the wheel

Everyone's situation is different, so everyone's premium will be too. It's important to get the right amount of coverage for your unique situation so you're not overpaying or underinsured.

Yes, it absolutely does. Insurance companies have a ton of statistics that show, in general, which vehicles have the most and least claims attached to them by make, model and year. More claims generally equal higher risk to insure and vice versa. Some vehicles are harder to repair, or may not have parts readily available. These also affect premiums.

As you may already have noticed, student insurance premiums are usually some of the highest around. Generally speaking, this is because most students fall into an age group that has a pretty high accident rate. Many of you are new to driving and are still gaining experience behind the wheel, so there's a higher risk of being involved in an accident. This higher risk leads to higher premiums.

At an-fault accident is when you’re considered responsible for an accident you’re involved in.
