This site provides additional information about your automobile and home/property insurance with Belair Insurance Company Inc. and some changes that may affect your coverage. Be sure to have your policy documents handy for reference as you review this website.

Highlighted below are some of the common automobile and property coverage differences and enhancements that may apply to you. For the purposes of the charts below, "Belair" refers to "Belair Insurance Company Inc.”

Collision Deductibles

If your previous policy had a collision deductible of $200, it will now be $300.

Comprehensive Deductibles

If your previous policy had a comprehensive deductible of $100, it will now be $200.

VIP Package

If your previous policy had the VIP Package, your policy will now have the Autocomfort® endorsement.

The following description is only a brief summary of coverage under Autocomfort (see your policy for details).

  • Reimbursement of expenses incurred for leasing of a temporary replacement vehicle
  • Coverage is provided up to a limit of $75,000 if you are held liable for damage caused to a rented or borrowed motor vehicle (the VIP Package had no limit)
  • Travel Protection coverage to pay unexpected expenses while on a trip away from home due to an accident involving or theft of the Described Automobile

If you previously had the VIP Package with Loss of Use, your applicable limit was $500. Your limit will now be $750.

With your new policy, an additional premium would be required to apply Autocomfort® to a secondary vehicle (this was included within your previous policy).

Extended Road Service Endorsement

If your previous policy had the Extended Road Service endorsement, roadside service coverage is now offered through a product called belairdirect Roadside Assistance™. You will no longer have to submit receipts and wait for reimbursement. With this coverage you will receive a card and you can simply call the number located on the card to obtain the covered service you require.

Your previous coverage was up to $250 per one occurrence and maximum $500 per policy year and the coverage now is $100 per occurrence with a maximum of four events per policy year

Motorhome

Your previous policy had coverage for personal property inside the motorhome with a limit of $5,000 per occurrence. You will now need to purchase the motorhome package to obtain this coverage, and with this your new limit will be increased to $7,500 per occurrence. The basic motorhome coverage does not cover your personal property inside the motorhome.

If you currently have the Limited Waiver of Depreciation, this coverage will no longer be available. However, if you would like Replacement Cost coverage, give us a call to discuss your package options available.

Emergency Financial Lifeline

This coverage is no longer available.

(NEW) Accident Forgiveness Endorsement

Accident Forgiveness is now available as an endorsement for an additional premium and eligibility is conditional.Please call us if you are interested in this coverage.

If you qualify for this coverage, but did not have it before, it will still be available for you at an additional premium.

(NEW)Waiver of Deductible Endorsement

This coverage is available through the Waiver of Deductible endorsement. In the event of a hit-and-run or total loss, your deductible (up to $1,000) will not be applied.*

* This coverage only applies to insured losses covered under your policy. The deductible is only waived in the event of a hit-and-run if damages exceed $1,000. Please see your policy wordings for more details.

Motorcycle

The premium for your new policy is based on driving your motorcycle 12 months of the year. If your motorcycle is currently in storage, please call 1.844.757.2925 to discuss further.

If you have the Limited Windshield endorsement coverage on your current policy, unfortunately this coverage is no longer available.

PROPERTY

Changes

Blanket Limit endorsement and (NEW)Single Amount of Insurance

If you previously had the Blanket Limit endorsement, your coverage had a single limit of $2,000,000, which is no longer available with your new policy.

New Premier, Comprehensive and Broad Homeowners policies will have a single amount of insurance equal to the sum of the amounts shown on the Summary of Coverage page for Dwelling Building, Detached Private Structures, Personal Property, and Additional Living Expenses.

Additional living expenses

If you have one of the following packages, your coverage limit has changed (amounts may have increased or decreased). Please refer to your Summary of Coverage page to view the new coverage limit:

  • Tenants Comprehensive and Homeowner Premier
  • Condominium Standard and Secondary condo
  • Seasonal Fire and Extended coverages
  • Seasonal Homeowner Broad
Earthquake

If you had this coverage with a 4% deductible, it will be changed to either a 5% or 10% deductible, depending on your location.

If you had this coverage with a 5% or 8% deductible, it may be adjusted to a 10% deductible, depending on your location.

Note that this coverage requires the Earthquake Endorsement.

Mass Evacuation

Previously, your policy wordings had a limit of 30 consecutive days and $5,000 in coverage. The 30 day limit will remain, but coverage is broadened to include no monetary limit; however, this only includes what is considered to be a necessary and reasonable increase in living expenses.

Water Damage Extension Endorsement

If you currently have a homeowners’ policy and have sewer and water backup and escape coverage, this will now be offered through the Enhanced Water Damage Package (EWDP), which contains: Sewer back up, Water and Sewer lines, Overland water (eligibility is based on location) and Ground water (which is available only if you are eligible for Overland Water).

If eligible, you can now increase your amount of coverage.

By-Laws

This coverage is no longer included in the policy wordings. However, there are $15,000 or $30,000 coverage options that can be purchased separately through the Limited By-Laws Coverage Endorsement to cover for the additional cost of demolition, construction or repairs, which are required to comply with any law regulating demolition, construction or repairs of the buildings for insured loss or damage, up to the amount shown on the Summary of Coverage page.

Mobile Home

Customers previously insured under a Mobile Standard or Comprehensive package will now receive the Broad form.

Identity Theft

There is no longer a set amount of $10,000 worth of coverage in the policy. There is some coverage for Credit, Debit Or Automated Teller Cards, Depositors Forgery and Counterfeit Paper Money that contain some exclusions. Please see your policy wordings for details).

However, you can purchase the Identity Theft endorsement, which offers coverage for crimes in which someone steals or misuses the personal, or financial, identifiers of someone else by using their credit card, driver’s license, social insurance number, or other personal identification numbers, to commit fraud or other criminal activity.

(NEW)Valuable Possessions Endorsement

This endorsement covers valuable possessions, such as jewellery, furs, watches, etc. for different limits on a blanket basis. And no appraisal is required.

UPGRADED COVERAGE

Homeowners

Customers previously insured under the Canadian Direct Insurance Standard form policy have been upgraded to the Belair Broad form homeowner product. This product offers enhanced coverage on your building, detached private structures and additional living expenses. Please see your policy wordings for more details or contact us.

Condominium owners

Customers previously insured under the Canadian Direct Insurance Standard form policy have been upgraded to the Belair Comprehensive Condominium Owners policy. This product offers All Risks coverage for personal property. Please see your policy wordings for more details.

Seasonal homeowners

Customers previously insured under the Canadian Direct Insurance Seasonal Dwelling Homeowner form have been upgraded to the Belair Seasonal Broad form package. This product offers enhanced coverage on your building, detached private structures and additional living expenses. Please see your policy wordings for more details or contact us.

Seasonal travel trailer (with permission to transport endorsement)

Customers with this coverage arrangement have been offered the Belair Vacation Trailer package. This package provides many coverage enhancements compared to the previous product. Please see your policy wordings for more details or contact us.

PREMIER HOMEOWNERS

Wind, Hail

At belairdirect, coverage for damage caused by the perils of Wind and Hail are automatically included. If you previously had these coverages at Canadian Direct Insurance, your new policy will also have them. Be advised that these coverages now carry a deductible of $2,500. If you previously had deductibles higher than $2,500, they will either be matched or moved to the next available deductible.

Our standard deductible offers are meant to blend coverage with affordability. If you feel that the deductible options above do not meet your needs, please contact a belairdirect representative to review what other options may be available.

Additional Living Expenses

Previously, you received coverage of up to 100% of your building amount. Now, the same coverage comes with a 30% limit.

Mortgage Rate Protection

This coverage is no longer available.

Personal Property in a Nursing Home

Previously you had up to $15,000 in coverage. Now, the same coverage comes with a $7,500 limit.

Land Excavation Provisions

These provisions are no longer available

GENERAL CHANGES

Wind, Hail & Sewer Back-Up Coverage

At belairdirect, coverage for damage caused by the perils of Wind and Hail are automatically included. If you previously had these coverages at Canadian Direct Insurance, your new policy will also have them. Be advised that these coverages now carry a deductible of $1,500. If you previously had deductibles higher than $1,000, they will either be matched or moved to the next available deductible. Sewer Back-Up (Enhanced Water Damage Package endorsement) is offered separately and also includes a deductible of $1,000. If you previously had this coverage, your new policy will also have it.

Deductibles

If you previously had a deductible of $500 you will be moved to $750 (unless you are under the Rented Condominium Comprehensive Coverage, in which case you will stay at a $500 deductible).

Personal Property in a Nursing Home

This coverage is no longer available.

Voluntary Medical Payments

Previously, your policy carried a $7,500 limit. Now, the same coverage comes with a $2,500 limit in a Homeowners Broad form and a $5,000 limit in a Homeowners Comprehensive form.

Voluntary Property Damage

Previously, your policy carried a $1,000 limit. Now, the same coverage comes with a $500 limit.

Billing changes

If you previously paid your policy by monthly installments, instead of a $20 annual processing fee, there is now a 2.5% interest charge*. There will now be a new fee of $35 for any insufficient funds.

Please also keep in mind that if you make a payment over the phone, it will be withdrawn that day, and not the effective date of your policy.

When did Canadian Direct Insurance join forces with belairdirect?

Canadian Direct Insurance and belairdirect officially joined forces on May 1, 2015. Canadian Direct Insurance began operating under the belairdirect brand in Alberta in November, 2015, and will begin operating under the belairdirect brand in British Columbia in November 7, 2016.

When were British Columbia customers notified about Canadian Direct Insurance operating under the belairdirect brand?

British Columbia customers were sent letters starting September 22, 2016, regarding Canadian Direct Insurance and belairdirect joining forces and about operating under the belairdirect brand in the province.

What will change for me?

Until your 2017 renewal date, nothing has changed in regards to your payments, coverage or service. Your current policy will continue as is and Canadian Direct Insurance will continue to be your insurer, until your 2017 renewal date.

If you need to make changes to your policy, you may continue to contact us just as you do today at 1.844.757.2925. Otherwise, no action is required by you at this time.
